California Christmas 2000

These pictures were taken in December- January, mostly around Sonora, in the heart of the gold country in Northern California's Sierra foothills. The weather was unseasonably warm and sunny, allowing me to cycle comfortably in shorts and t-shirt and take lots of pictures.

Map of the area

Cycling up in the forest near Twain Harte, North East of Sonora. John and I took the bikes in the truck up into the high ground and pine forests for some great mixed riding.

Cycling South through Wards Ferry Canyon, a few miles from Sonora on the way to Groveland. The quiet road descends for about a 1000 ft to the Tolumne river, which flows from Yosemite and is a popular for kayaking.

Some water-sculpted and polished rocks in a stream bed north east of Sonora

Columbia- historic old gold town.

The sculpted rocks have been carved by high-pressure water used in gold extraction. It is set in a beautiful State Historic Park with a nice walk.
